February 2012

For our Bible study this month let's look at the readings for February 19. If you find this intriguing I hope that you will join others to go deeper. We will meet on Sunday, February 12 at 5:30 PM.

Our passages focus on the way in which Jesus is revealed to the disciples. It is our belief that we can only know God through what God reveals, and in Jesus God has shown quite a bit.

Read mark 8:27-33

When Peter speaks up for the rest of the disciples and declares Jesus to be the Messiah we would say that he got it right. When Peter refuses to accept what it means for Jesus to be the Messiah we would say that he got it wrong. How is Peter setting his mind on Human things?

Self-sacrifice is a noble thin, but we would have to admit that it is not a natural inclination that we have .
It is in our nature to look out for number one, so when Jesus talks about denying ourselves to follow him,
or to take up our cross, he is completely redirecting our priorities.

Read Mark 8:34-9.1

This is powerful teaching. Jesus calls for a life that is totally devoted to him. Do you think that suck a life is ever possible? Why, or why not?

As if to underscore Jesus' authority to make such enormous claims on a person we are permitted to witness an event that only three of the disciples were invited to witness. If there were any doubts about Jesus being the Messiah, this should settle matters.

Read Mark 9:2-13

The tranfiguration serves as an affirmation of what the demons have been saying, that Jesus is the Holy One of God. Notice verse ten, where the disciples question what rising from the dead means. What is the connection between this vision of glory and rising from the dead?
